Message From The Family

Thank you for your support during this difficult time. Please enhance this tribute to Evelyn by adding your memories and photos.

Mrs. Evelyn Wilson Brooks, age 88 of Shelby, passed away Wednesday, June 6, 2018 at Peak Resources in Shelby surrounded by her family.
She is survived by her children, Ben Brooks and wife Jane of Shelby, NC, Ken Brooks and wife Teresa of Shelby, NC, and Wilson Brooks and wife Nicole of Shelby, NC, five grandchildren, Bill Brooks and wife Libby, Beth Scism and husband Marty, Tracy Hankins and husband David, Kevin Brooks and wife Angela, and Lauren Brooks, nine great grandchildren, Hannah and Sarah Brooks, Salem, Will, and Caroline Scism, Ian and Gavin Hankins, and Avery and Rhett Brooks, and a brother, Ray Wilson and wife Mickey of TX.
Born May 21, 1930 in Cleveland County, Mrs. Brooks was the daughter of the late Homer and Dora Welch Wilson and was preceded in death by her husband, William Herbert Brooks, a son, Thomas Wilburn Brooks, and two sisters, Margie Wilson Hucks and Jeanette Wilson Toney.
Evelyn worked in textiles but she really found her niche working with children. She served as a Girl Scout leader and worked as a teacher's assistant. She worked at both Lattimore and Union Elementary Schools. Co-workers attest that she had an amazing ability in having fun with the students but drawing the line when it was time to master basic skills required for kindergarteners. After retiring from the public schools, she worked as a pre-school teacher at Double Springs Baptist Church Day Care. Parents knew that their children would be prepared for kindergarten because Miss Evelyn knew the exact skills that they needed. Always the children in her care knew that she loved them.
Hobbies were a big part of Evelyn's life. Whatever she pursued, she did so wholeheartedly having her own kiln in her basement to fire her pottery and ceramics. She loved camping and the beach, especially if her grandchildren were with her.
The family would like to express a sincere thanks to the staff of Peak Resources for the loving care they had given Evelyn during her stay.
Graveside services will be held at 10:00 am Saturday, June 9, 2018 at Double Springs Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Tony Tench.
